In 2017 we removed prizes and instead did mostly random draws of cold hard cash using 10% of gross funds pulled in from Challenge entry fees. The Overall Entrant received $1000 cash, four winners, two finalists and two entrants ( all drawn at random) won smaller cash prizes. Digital certificates for winners and finalists are also given out.
In 2018 – we will re-consider this aspect again and announce what we’re up to in January 2018.
History of prize giving
In 2016 we had over $20, 000 in prizes.
The move to cash prizes was made at the request of entrants and personal trainers who overwhelmingly told us, year after year, they would prefer there was no marketing or sponsorship involvement, even though we tried our darndest to keep the involvement of our 60 plus sponsors super fun and interactive. The roll on affect of taking on that feedback obviously mean’t however no prizes from sponsors! While we knew that would likely decrease the number of sign ups we had, we were willing to take the leap and see what else we could do.
In so many ways this new method around prize giving is actually more in alignment with our philosophies. While we get that it can be important to reward performance, the hugest goal for us is to motivate and reward people to simply achieve their own goal, for them to get across the finish line and be stoked with their achievements. More often that not they’ll do that and still not win a category. By all accounts they are hugely successful.
For those involved with the organisation of the Challenge we have always seen it as more of a ‘course’ than a competition, where the accolades should be more like getting an A+ or a B- or a DNF rather than Winner and Finalist status, but some how that never seemed as sexy.
It certainly seems however that the actual entrants who do the Challenge don’t mind the lack of prizes with many saying in their reports the win is what they have achieved and no money in the world could make them return to their pre-challenge state.
2015 and 2016 prizes
For the last few years we’ve had over 60 sponsors on board and given away $20,000 plus in prizes and in 2016 our major awesome prize, was the New Zealand Discover Stewart Island Package by Real Journeys for two people – a five night Stewart Island Discovery Expedition, return ferry from Bluff across Foveaux Strait, a Paterson Inlet Cruise and Village & Bays Tour and a three night stay at Stewart Island Lodge, valued at over $6,000!
